Democrats Have Won the Popular Vote in 7 out of the Past 8 Presidential Elections. Why is the Supreme Court so Conservative?
Two words - Electoral College
Since 1992, the Democratic party's Presidential ticket has won the popular vote in each election except 2004. The Electoral College negated those wins in 2000 and in 2016.
Meanwhile, one-third of Supreme Court justices were nominated by a President who lost the popular vote (in 2016) by 2.9 million votes and were confirmed by Senators representing a minority of the Nation's population.
The leaked memo obtained by Politico suggests that the Supreme Court is on the verge of overturning Roe v. Wade. Is this where the majority of Americans stand on the issue?
Hardly. A Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that 69 percent of Americans do not want the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. The most recent Gallup poll finds that 58 percent of Americans are against the Supreme Court overturning the ruling.
Clearly the archaic 18th Century Electoral College is the fundamental mechanism responsible for the inexorable erosion of American democracy. By propagating minority rule, policy views held by a majority of American voters are routinely ignored, further alienating voters.
It's time to educate and persuade our fellow voters about the inadequacies -- and simple unfairness -- of the Electoral College. Join our growing movement! The National Vote exists to educate and mobilize our fellow citizens in strengthening our democracy by ending the unjust and outdated Electoral College.
